It is the main objective of this doctoral thesis to develop the basic working principles of a computing system with high fault tolerance and automatic failure elimination in the field of transporting systems. For such transport systems, a controller which works by means of distributed computing systems has been developed, installed and tested.
Any failure of one or more system components is immediately automatically identified, and through appropriate measures the system is then brought back into its consistent original state. This means that no major interruptions can paralyse the functional operations of the whole system. Within the framework of this thesis, different approaches towards the realisation of this special re-start technology are evaluated. For this, the sub-strategy principle, inclusive of all available sources of information, has been selected. The new technology was then installed in a multi-line pneumatic tube system. The project thus comprised the fields of project planning and project management, as well as all aspects of hardware and software development. The pneumatic tube system chosen for this project is a transport system that is typical of its kind. Some of the detailed tasks that had to be completed for the project are as follows : system planning and development, hardware development, database design, software development for the individual hardware components, and the automatic calling system. The degree of detailed illustration has been selected in such a way that the materials and documents introduced may serve as references for any further comparable projects in the field of fault-tolerant distributed computing systems. The control software is freely configurable and may thus be transferred to other network architectures. The combination and design of the station computers and the communication computers are universal. This standardisation of necessary components may lead to a considerable cost benefit for future projects. As the findings from in-company tests show, all specifications concerning fault tolerance have been completely fulfilled. The final overall solution has been met with the highest acceptance by both the users and the service personnel.
