Pichler, K.-H. (2010).
This work was performed to evaluate and to compare methods to utilize low-temperature heat energy found in industrial waste water.
A literature review was performed searching for various methods currently used and investigated. A bibliography reference was created using JABREF. The review includes methods to convert the low temperature heat energy in other forms of energy and the usage of the low temperature heat energy to create heat energy on another higher or lower temperature level.
Using Data, provided from an industrial site, various methods were compared and calculations regarding the efficiency and the energy output of the processes were made. A main focus was to lower the energy needed to cool the used waste water to an environmentally acceptable temperature for the recirculation in a river.
In addition simulations were performed to evaluate the efficiency of different working fluids at the selected temperatures. The results of these calculations were compared to the results of the literature review and the potential of the reviewed processes for the given temperature levels has been evaluated. It was shown that currently used processes, like the ORC process for converting heat energy into electrical energy, or the vapor compression cycle heat pump for using the waste heat to create heat on a higher temperature level had the best performances. If possible it is preferable to use the waste heat energy in a heat exchanger directly.
