dc.description.abstract
In the past two centuries the international state system was subject to tremendous changes in its composition. After a period of contraction the number of states nearly quadrupled in the twentieth century. Despite this enormous change, the state system exhibits a number of robust empirical regularities that are well-known but still in want of a theoretical explanation. This doctoral thesis puts the focus on the modeling aspect and presents and evaluates the contributions of equilibrium economics and complex adaptive systems models to theory generation with regard to the topic at hand. It is shown that equilibrium models have a hard time coping with an issue that lies at the heart of change in the international state system: endogenous agency.
The complex adaptive systems approach (exemplified by the method of agent-based modeling) proves to be a particularly promising alternative that allows incorporating the endogenous entry and exit of actors, i.e.
the birth and death of states. Yet, agent-based modeling also suffers from idiosyncratic problems, specifically with regard to the reproducibility of studies based on agent-based models. This thesis uncovers shortcomings in the agent-based models used for explaining stylized facts of the international state system and advances a method that allows for accurate evaluation of the reproducibility of agent-based models by means of statistical testing. Thus, this study also contributes to the literature on model verification in simulation modeling.
Agent-based modeling holds the promise for developing integrative accounts of change in the international state system that draw on the rich menu of insights from political science, economics, sociology, and the science of history. Yet, major efforts are still needed to improve the verification, replicability, and transparency of agent-based models in order for the method to meet increased acceptance within the social sciences.
