Nowadays expansion joints and bearings are traditionally set in structures to minimize the forces caused by the indeterminacy accompanied by constraint of the expansion as much as possible. Because of that advancement local weak spots will be embedded in the structure.
On the other hand, the global structure would be weakened overall.
Beside the costs of expansion joints and bearings, they also need to be serviced continuously. The durability of expansion joints and bearings is lower than the durability of the buildings, they are installed in.
Finally, the joints have to be exchanged completely during the structures utilization phase. If one of these structural parts does not work anymore, it has to be changed immediately, because one defect part could induce defects in the rest of the building. Such redevelopment measures are associated with both, further costs and, under certain circumstances, usage limitation during the exchange. On the other hand, the integral construction technique leads to durable and low maintenance structures. Furthermore, concrete is just predestinated for the use in structures without joints.
Monolithic structures are highly statically indetermined systems.
Induced elongations, displacements and rotations, e.g. caused by change in temperature, evoke reactive forces. However, with utilization of the nonlinear material behavior jointless structures can be designed reasonable.
The quantity of the reactive forces and resulting stress resultant depends on numerous factors. For example, special concrete mixes, light-weight concrete, and high performance concrete prove to be helpful to minimize the stress. With these types of concrete the thermal coefficient and the stiffness, which are the two important factors for the quantity of the reactive forces, can be managed that way very well.
The allocation of the stress resultant also can be controlled effectively through specific modification of the stiffness allocation.
Because of the interaction between foundation and structure, the underground also has a significant effect on the resulting stress of monolithic buildings.
Despite all these problems and difficulties during planning and sizing the concept of integral structures can be affirmed by many already successful projects in high rise structrues, bridge buildings, and underground engineering.
