dc.description.abstract
This diploma thesis describes the detection and identification of volcanic ash in soil samples of an archeological site in Palaikastro, Crete. Basic digging work was done by C. Knappett (Univ. Exeter) within a project lead by H. Sackett, S. MacGillivray and J.Driessen. The aim of this project was to investigate the bronceage culture on ancient crete.
The main attention was focused on the detection of volcanic ash from minoan eruption on Santorini (Greece).
After removing carbonate and clay in the soil samples the residual silicate was investigated via microscope. Those samples who contained significant amounts of volcanic ash were chosen for further analysis. To increase the ash content samples were treated with fractionated sedimentation and magnetic seperation (one sample).
The enriched and sealed samples were irradiated in two charges in the TRIGA-Mark-II reactor of the Atominstitut der österreichischen Universitäten for 34 resp. 51 hours at a neutronflux of 10exp13 Neutrons per squarecentimeter and second.
Determination of element concentration was carried out by gamma spectroscopy using five multielement standards: SRM 1633b (NIST), GBW 07113-Rhyolith (MC), SO1 (CANMET), BCR No.142 (BCR) and SRM 2702 (NIST).
In seven soils samples he measured elemental profils agreed with those of Santorini BO ash, whereas in one case the distinction between Santorini BO ash and the siganture of an much older event was not possible without doubt.
