dc.description.abstract
European cross-border metropolitan regions are an emerging phenomenon in European regional planning patterns. Not only on an European scale, but also in national contexts cooperation and coordination over administrative boundaries is becoming a more and more important issue. People, goods, knowledge and capital are increasingly independent from territorial restrictions. Regions see themselves faced with the pressing question of how in an environment of fading boundaries, interdependency and globalisation regional development goals can be achieved. This work focuses on the current challenges that pose to politics and spatial planning in the Trinational Metropolitan Region in the Upper Rhine Valley in the perspective of these global driving forces. Within the scope of this study an assessment of the regional governance regime by means of an investigation of institutional structures as well as a qualitative network analysis were performed, which unveil the picture of an example for successful European integration on a regional level.
