dc.description.abstract
This thesis focuses on the geometric analysis of F-mechanisms, i.e., of planar parallel 3-RRR robots with three synchronously driven cranks. This type of mechanism enables to modify the constrained motion by phase shifting during operation.
After a detailed definition of F-mechanisms it is proved that in the equidirectional case the reverse movement is of the same type. After that, a plenty of examples proof the broad variety of obtainable constrained motions - including a permanent stillstand.
The second chapter includes graphical methods for velocity and acceleration analysis. It turns out that these constructions are not as straightforward as one might expect. Each of them can be reduced to a problem of projective geometry. This is why this problem with all possible special cases is treated in a separate section.
The graphical methods already reveal that there a poses in which there is either no pole configuration or an infinite number of pole configurations. These poses are called singular (like in robotics) or twofold singular, respectively. There are simple geometric characterizations for both by complanar carrier lines of the arms or additionally by particular complanar parallels. Later we will see that in general the singular poses are those where the cranks need to return the orientation of their rotation in order to perform the full motion.
The twofold singular poses are those where bifurcations can take place.
The analytic velocity and acceleration analysis lead to systems of linear equations. Their rules for solvability confirm again the characterizations of singular and twofold singular poses.
The analytic and algorithmic treatment of the constrained motions is an algebraic problem of degree 6. Based on Maple, a numeric analysis of the movements can be carried out. Also this is a non-standard problem. This results from the fact that professional software packages for the analysis and synthesis of linkages often fail at F-mechanisms without any comment or explanation.
A suitable Maple-export demonstrates that the question whether the cranks of a given F-mechanism are completely revolvable cannot be answered in terms of dimensions of the mechanism. The problem can only be cleared from case to case by a numerical analysis. Here a particular diagram is very useful which also indicates reverse poses as well as bifurcations of the constrained motions.
