Introduction: Performance measurements and evaluations of public transport systems are essential tools of transport planning, which lead to a continuous progress of public transport systems. The quality of a public transport system can be illustrated by various indicators, therefore, lay the foundation for improvement measures. Purpose: The aim of this diploma thesis is to find spatial indicators, which on the one hand can be determined easily, and, on the other hand, correlate strongly with the public transport share in the modal split or with the satisfaction regarding public transport. The determination of the indicators should be based exclusively on geographical data of a public transport system and the distribution of the population. Methods: Seven indicators for eight major European cities are calculated, partly with the aid of a GIS-software, and compared to the respective public transport share of the modal split and the satisfaction with the public transport. Afterwards regression analyzes are used to investigate how strongly the indicators relate to the public transport share in the modal split or to the satisfaction with public transport. Conclusions: The result of this study is that the indicator "stops per 1.000 inhabitants" strongly correlates with the public transport share in the modal split. The indicators “average stop distance”, "public transport network - road network ratio" and “public transport network - area ratio” show a medium correlation with the public transport share in the modal split and the satisfaction with the public transport. These indicators can be easily determined with a ratio calculation. The more complex indicators, which include the spatial stop distribution and the population distribution, show unexpected weaker correlations.
