Fellner, D. (2010).
Nowadays Planning and Control are part of those core competencies, without a company of a certain size cannot be leaded in a economical and reasonable way.
Tools to lead a company are ERP-systems, which are collecting data about resources and processes of a company. In this field of research the idea for this thesis has become alive. At the Institute for Management Sciences at Vienna University of Technology a team under leadership of Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Walter Schwaiger develops an ERP-system called ERP-Control. Instead of using established concepts implemented in popular ERP-systems ERP-Control realizes new concepts and gets rid of old paradigms.
An ERP-system also contains planning functionality. Due to plans people try to handle an uncertain future. This only can happen in a certain scale because we cannot know the future exactly and with an increasing time distance to present the uncertainty of the prediction is also increasing. Managing this uncertainty is one of the main topics of this thesis.
One way to realize planning functionality is stochastic optimal production planning and control. Across multiple periods it calculates the optimal output amount for production. Keep in mind that plans are only models of reality and are getting more and more inexact over time.
To calibrate a plan over time control mechanisms are getting used to generate a good model for describing reality. This approach comes out of cybernetics, a science which is concerned in control topics. In this thesis a method based on principles of cybernetics gets developed, which is using expected values for an intertemporal control of production output. Using stochastic control theory as an additional approach tries to make uncertainties and coincidences computable in certain limits.
