Miltner, A. (2010).
Road traffic is among the major consumers of fossil energy worldwide. Therefore, international trends have been launched to shift the operation of vehicles to renewable fuels. Beside electrical power from renewable resources, biodiesel, bioethanol and biogas another possible alternative fuel is biohydrogen. However, at present the only commercially available technology for the renewable production of hydrogen is the alkaline electrolysis operated with electricity from renewable resources. On the other hand no technology for the production of biohydrogen from biomass is fully developed yet. Hence, it is not possible to base an evaluation of different biohydrogen production technologies on real plant data. But there is the possibility to create a data basis my means of process simulation and to use these data for the evaluation of different technologies and plant layouts.
Within the present work several technical relevant hydrogen production technologies applicable in Austria have been evaluated with the process simulation software IPSEpro. For this purpose new simulation models had to be developed at first to be able to represent all required process steps. Afterwards selected technologies for the regenerative production of hydrogen have been simulated. These technologies comprise the alkaline water electrolysis, the steam reforming of biogas, the steam reforming of gasification gas, the coupled dark and photo fermentation and the coupled dark and biogas fermentation. All considered technologies have been investigated with different plant layouts and/or different raw materials. Furthermore, the steam reforming of natural gas has been included in the evaluation as a reference technology to be able to compare the renewable technologies with the present state of the art technology for hydrogen production. Each technology has been designed to produce hydrogen in a quality that can be used in cars with hydrogen fuel cell drive.
The performed process simulation calculations have then been used to analyse the production efficiency and the energy efficiency of the investigated technologies and plant layouts. Furthermore, whole process chains have been created starting from the raw material via the hydrogen production, the transport of the hydrogen, the filling station and ending with the hydrogen utilization in the cars. These whole process chains have then been analysed economically. The performed analyses have pointed out that it is not possible to determine one outstanding technology for the sustainable production of hydrogen. Each of the investigated technology alternatives has some advantages and some disadvantages that would have to be weighed against each other for a specific application.
