Die Welt und die Vorgänge, die sich in ihr abspielen, können im Rahmen von unterschiedlichen Systemtheorien beschrieben werden. Eine Allgemeine Systemtheorie geht davon aus, dass es bestimmte Eigenschaften und Regeln in allen Arten von Systemen - von der atomaren bis hinauf zu einer globalen, sozialen Ebene und weiter - gibt, die allgemein gültig sind. Gelingt es der Wissenschaft, eine derartige Allgemeine Systemtheorie hinreichend zu beschreiben, wäre dies nicht nur ein Vorteil für interdisziplinäre Arbeiten und damit für viele unterschiedliche Wissenschaftsgebiete, sondern würde auch ganz allgemein neue Perspektiven auf die Welt als solches und ihre Probleme erlauben. Die Dissertation verfolgt das Ziel, ausgehend von existierenden Ansätzen, die notwendigen Begriffe und Konzepte einer Allgemeinen Systemtheorie in einem formalen, computationalen Modell zusammen zu fassen und die damit verbundenen Charakteristika zu untersuchen. Von besonderer Bedeutung sind dabei die Arbeiten des Biologen und Systemtheoretikers Ludwig von Bertalanffy und der von ihm mitgegründeten "Society for General Systems Research", die im auch in dieser Arbeit als solches bezeichneten Bertalanffy-Programm zusammengeführt werden.<br />Das formale Modell, das dabei im Rahmen der Dissertation konstruiert wird - Computational General System Theory (CGST) -, sowie die Ergebnisse in Hinblick auf praktische Anwendbarkeit und Komplexität desselben, sollen als Grundlage für die Fortführung des Bertalanffy-Programms im 21.<br />Jahrhundert dienen. Die formale Abbildung und Konstruktion erfolgt daher basierend auf bestehenden Modellen der modernen Informatik wie Semantic-Web-Sprachen und Zellulären Automaten. Ausgehend vom CGST-Modell erfolgt in der Arbeit schließlich eine wissenschaftstheoretische Auseinandersetzung mit den für eine Allgemeine Systemtheorie besonders wesentlichen Konzepten der Emergenz und Selbstorganisation. Dazu wird eine Abbildung der Arbeiten von Kurt Gödel zu unentscheidbaren Sätzen in der Principia Mathematica auf die Eigenschaften emergenter Systeme vorgenommen und mit der Notwendigkeit selbstreferenzieller Zustände in ebensolchen Systemen in Verbindung gebracht.<br />
