This diploma thesis tries to find connections between local art-based processes and the city's image and asks for the role of urban planning in this context. Apparently the general social changes have a decisive influence on cities and city planning which makes local processes a dominating factor in a city's development in many ways.
These processes often result in urban regeneration in terms of positive effects on the image. At the same time the image of place is of increasing importance in the global competition of cities due to the post-fordist definition of space attached with meaning and the experience- and emotion-oriented experience-driven society. Moreover it represents cities in an economy characterized by limited attention resources. This is why cities have ambitions of creating an unmistakable city profile that shows their distinctiveness. Art plays an important part in this. Because of its distinctive images it is frequently being utilized in any kind of a city's planning that has an image potential.
But on the city's local level there are art-based processes able of creating images as well. These are often capable of generating spatially relevant images that are transferred to the city's image.
By fragmentarily analyzing the Viennese image construction and four case studies of local art-based regeneration processes of the city the connection and cooperation between the different city levels is being examined. This provides information on the importance of local art-based regeneration processes as a fundamental part in the creation of the city image and on the role of urban planning in this field.
