dc.description.abstract
In several references polishing lagoons are designated as a simple and reliable method to improve the effulent quality of a biological wastewater treatment plant with respect to suspended solids, organic residual, nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus)and hygienic parameters. This may be relevant especially in cases with receiving waters of low dilution capacity or with particularly high demands on water quality.
These references are contrasted with some progress reports on the operation of polishing lagoons that offer information on the possibility of secondary pollution. Furthermore, a few more problems and difficulties may arise in respect to operation of such polishing lagoons.
Ten wastewater treatment plants with polishing lagoons were selected in the course of the thesis. According to collected data and based on fruitful discussions with the treatment plant operators an assessment, focusing on performance of purification is established. Moreover, the investigated poolishing lagoons are compared among each other. Besides, problems in operation of a polishing lagoon were argued. Subsequently, at three sewage plants the polishing lagoons were analysed more exactly by own measurements and sampling.
As a consequence of good maintained polishing lagoons, and derived from improved microbiological-hygienic parameters, polishing lagoons are reasonably considered as subsequent cleaning tools of waste water treatment plants.
On the other hand, poorly maintained polishing lagoons result in a backward-dilution or even a secondary pollution.
