Die zentrale Frage, die immer auftaucht, wenn Ethik und Wirtschaft in Verbindung gebracht werden lautet: Schließen sich Ethik und wirtschaftlicher Erfolg nicht aus? Muss man nicht, um ethisch zu handeln, finanzielle Einbussen hinnehmen? Nutzt der Mitbewerber nicht mein ethisches Handeln aus? Dieser Fragestellung geht diese Masterthese - mit dem speziellen Fokus auf kirchliche Institutionen - nach. Die erste These lautet: Ethisches Handeln zahlt sich langfristig aus. Kurzfristig ist es aber eine Investition, um die eigene Position langfristig zu stärken. Die zweite These lautet: Auch dort wo grundsätzlich die Wichtigkeit ethischen Handelns erkannt wird, bedarf es einer systematischen Implementierung eines durchdachten Systems, das sich immer wieder selbst hinterfragt bzw. hinterfragt wird, um Transparenz, Vergleichbarkeit, Wiederholbarkeit, Gerechtigkeit, etc. herzustellen. Ausgehend von einem geschichtlichen überblick der Ethik und der theoretischen Darstellung des Begriffes Ethik und der Begriffe Moral, Tugend, Gerechtigkeit, etc. wurde der aktuelle Stand des Diskurses, in dem sich die Wirtschaftsethik derzeit befindet, betrachtet. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf die Beiträgen von Karl Homann und Andreas Suchanek. Anschließend wurde der Ist-Stand ethischer Handlungsweise bei den unten erwähnten Einrichtungen untersucht. An Hand der Interviews mit den Verantwortlichen (Christoph Kardinal Schönborn - Erzbistum Wien, Abt Berthold Heigl - Stift Seitenstetten, Altabt Burkhard - Ellegast Stift Seitenstetten) wurde der hohe Anspruch der untersuchten Einrichtungen an das eigene ethischen Handeln beobachtet. Die folgenden vier Schwerpunkte konnten übereinstimmend festgestellt werden: Maßhalten, Nachhaltigkeit, Ausgleich zwischen wirtschaftlichem und sozialem Handeln, Investition in die Mitarbeiter Die Situation des Immobilienbestandes der drei Eigentümer (Erzbistum Wien, Stift Seitenstetten, Stift Melk) spiegelt diesen Anspruch wieder zeigt aber, dass die Positionen im Verhältnis zur gelebten Umsetzung gelegentlich an der Realität scheitern. Daraus kann die Notwendigkeit einer Verschriftlichung des ethischen Selbstverständnisses der Institution EB Rentamt (als Verwalter der Liegenschaften) abgeleitet werden. Von diesem Ist-Stand aus wurde ein umfassendes Konzept für die Implementierung eines Leitbild erstellt, das den Mitarbeitern als Handreichung dienen soll, das eigene Verhalten an den verschriftlichten ethnischen Selbstverständnis zu messen.
