Preparation of inorganic-organic hybrid materials by sol-gel processing requires the development of organically substituted metal alkoxide derivatives. This work deals with the structural chemistry of titanium and zirconium alkoxide derivatives modified by various amines, diamines and aminoethanol derivatives as well as amide groups. The reaction of monoamines with M(OR)4 led to the formation of crystalline adducts of the composition M2(OR)8(NHR'R'')2 (M= Ti, Zr; R= iPr, Et; R'= H, alkyl; R''= alkyl),in which the metal atoms are bridged by two OR groups and the amine ligands are trans to each other. Bonding of the amines is supported by hydrogen bridges to adjacent OR ligands. In solution, 1H-NMR spectra showed time-averaged signals due to rapid site exchange. Amine coordination was evidenced by 15N- and 1H-, 13C-NMR investigations at low temperature. When diamines, (H2NCH2CH2)2NH or (H2NCH2CH2)3N were reacted with M(OiPr)4, the amines bridge different M2(OiPr)8 moieties resulting in chain-like or layered coordination polymers. Coordination of the amino groups and formation of coordination polymers in solution was followed by 1H-, 13C- and 15N-NMR spectroscopy. When lithiumdiisopropylamid was added to solutions of M2(OR)8(NH2R'')2, oxo clusters of the composition Li4Ti4O2(OiPr)12(NR'')2 were obtained.
1H-, 13C- and 7Li-NMR investigations showed that these compounds are not dynamic in solution at room temperature. Reaction of Ti(OR)4 with different aminoethanol derivatives resulted in the crystalline compounds [Ti(OR)3(OR'NH2)]2 (R= iPr, Et; R'= alkylene). The structures are related to that of the Ti2(OR)8(NHR'R'')2 adducts, with the chelating aminoethanolate ligands occupying the position of the neutral amino groups and a neighbouring OR ligand. The structures are not dynamic in solution at room temperature as evidenced by NMR-spectroscopy. The use of NaTi(OiPr)5 yielded [Ti(OiPr)2(OCH2CH2NH2)2]2 where two additional aminoethanolate ligands bridge the metal centres via their OCH2 groups. The amino groups of these aminoethanolate ligands are not coordinated. In contrast to the dimeric titanium compounds, reaction of Zr(OBu)4 with 2-aminoethanol yielded [Zr(OBu)3(OCH2CH2NH2)]6 which can also be considered to be an adduct of two Zr(OBu)4 molecules to Zr4(OBu)10(OCH2CH2NH2)6 with chelating bridging aminoethanolate ligands. When the same experiments were carried out with Zr(OiPr)4, the monomer Zr(OCH2CH2NH2)4 was obtained. When four equivalents of water were added to [Ti(OEt)3(OCH2CH2NH2)]2, the hydrolysis product Ti8O6(OEt)12(OCH2CH2NH2)8 was obtained, in which the original Ti:aminoethanolate ratio was retained. It can structurally be derived from condensed [Ti(OEt)3(OCH2CH2NH2)]2-dimers. The tetrameric oxo cluster [TiO(OiPr)(OCHPhCHMeCHNHMe)]4 was obtained when HOCHPhCHMeCHNHMe was reacted with Ti(OiPr)4 and water. It can structurally be derived from tetrameric Ti4(OR)16 (R= Et, Me) where four titanium octahedrons are connected via shared edges. In solution every ligand position can clearly be assigned to its 1H-, 13C- and 15N-NMR signals. Two of four OR positions undergo rapid site exchange with free alcohol while the others do not.
