Today's commonly used techniques for measuring the earth's rotation define a pole that in reality doesn't represent a real pole.
The Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) falls into that category.
The so called Celestial Intermediate Pole (CIP) arises out of habit and tradition and without any theoretical foundation. In the last few years ringlasers reached a precision and stability to enable measurements of the earth's rotation. However, the ringlaser is sensible for movements of the rotation vector, which represents the real rotation axis of the earth. To compare results from both techniques, they have to be referred to the same pole.
This thesis starts with a demonstration of the differences between the commonly used CIP and the instantaneous rotation pole (IRP). It gives a simple and clearly arranged overview on the different variations of the earth's rotation divided into polar motion and length of day (LOD).
After introducing the theoretical background, the main part deals with the solution of calculating the rotation vector and combining earth orientation data obtained by the two completely different measuring techniques, the VLBI and the ringlaser. This is done by a routine written in MATLAB, which is described in detail concerning functionality and formalism. With the implementation of the common models, such as the precession-/nutation model IAU 2000A, the ocean tides model by Eanes, the model for gravitational tides in polar motion and Brzezinski's model to calculate the Oppolzer terms, the program can be used in different ways. A short insight in this variability is given in the third part of this work. The reader can find (1) a comparison of the Oppolzer terms, calculated once with the model and once with the program, (2) an examination and verification of the mathematical formula used to calculate the different amplitudes of polar motion when changing from the CIP to the IRP, (3) results achieved with high resoluted data from the VLBI CONT02 and CONT05 campaigns and (4) a comparision of earth orientation data obtained from ringlaser measurements of the year 2006 with those calculated by the program.
This thesis shows how the change from the CIP to the IRP can give new insights in the high resoluted subdaily polar motion and how the ringlaser, as a new and alternative measuring technique can play a decisive role in this task.
