Ultradünne Schichten von Eisen (Fe) auf Kupfer (Cu) können, abhängig von Temperatur, Schichtdicke, kristallographischer Orientierung des Substrats und Art der Herstellung, unterschiedliche strukturelle und magnetische Eigenschaften aufweisen. Bei Raumtemperatur (RT) epitaktisch aufgetragene Schichten von 5-10 Monolagen (ML) Fe auf Cu(100) wachsen pseudomorph kubisch-flächenzentriert (fcc) und sind paramagnetisch.<br />Durch Beschuss mit niederenergetischen Edelgas-Ionen kann lokal der Übergang zu einer ferromagnetischen kubisch-raumzentrierten Struktur (bcc) ausgelöst werden. Die Auswirkungen des Beschusses mit Edelgas-Ionen unterschiedlicher Energie und Masse auf die strukturellen und magnetischen Eigenschaften von ca. 8ML dicken Fe-Schichten wurden durch Messungen des magnetooptischen Oberflächen-Kerr-Effekts (SMOKE), niederenergetische Elektronenbeugung (LEED), Augerelektronenspektroskopie (AES) und Ionenstreuspektroskopie (LEIS) untersucht und mit den Ergebnissen von Monte-Carlo-Simulationen (SRIM) verglichen. Ebenfalls untersucht wurden die Stabilität der fcc-Struktur von 6ML und 9ML dicken Fe-Schichten auf Cu(100) beim Abkühlen und die ferromagnetische Umwandlung von 8ML Fe auf Cu(100) bei Ionenbeschuss durch eine zusätzlich aufgedampfte Goldschicht.
