"... as a mathematically minded friend put it, he (Benoit B.
Mandelbrot) moves orthogonally - at right angles - to every fashion." [Benoit B. Mandelbrot, The (Mis)Behaviour of Markets, Seite xvi] Dieses Zitat beschreibt Mandelbrot und die Ergebnisse seiner Arbeit perfekt.
"... as a mathematically minded friend put it, he (Benoit B.
Mandelbrot) moves orthogonally - at right angles - to every fashion." [Benoit B. Mandelbrot, The (Mis)Behaviour of Markets, page xvi] This citation characterizes Mandelbrot and the results of his work perfectly. His analysis of stock prices resulted in conclusions contrary to those of modern finance. In his opinion real prices misbehave badly if the models of modern finance are applied since they were built on Louis Bachelier's ideas. Mandelbrot's criticism led him to introduce fractal geometry in financial markets with new dimensions of roughness.
His argumentation is accepted in a small part of the financial world, the rest of it rejects it.
The book "The Volatility Surface - A Practitioner's Guide" by Jim Gatheral reveals some of the reasons why Mandelbrot's opinion should not be adopted without reservation. Mandelbrot analyzes the financial markets econometrically over long periods, whereas Gatheral supports the idea of fitting the prices through calibration for short time series - two completely contrary points of view. The first part of this master thesis is an objective summary of one of Mandelbrot's most successful books, "The (Mis)Behaviour of Markets", and the second part focuses on the critical evaluation of his arguments on the foundation of Gatheral's work.
