The present work introduces a new concept for passive tip-leakage control which can be preferably used at high pressure steam turbine stages. The basic idea of the method is the connection of the blade leading edge and the blade tip by an internal channel. Due to the difference between the stagnation pressure at the leading edge and the low pressure at the blade tip, a small amount of working fluid is extracted from the blade passage. At the blade tip, a jet is injected roughly perpendicular to the tip gap flow driven by the blade pressure difference. It is proposed that the jet blocks at least a part of the tip gap flow. This method can be used for applications where low temperatures and high pressure differences occur so that no blade cooling is necessary and loss reduction can be treated as an important criterion. For the development of optimal injection geometries a computational fluid dynamics analysis is applied. Here changes of several parameters like the injection angle or the injection position are investigated. Then a suitable variant is carried out using an existing blade and experimental measurements are taken. The injection results in a substantial reduction of tip gap losses within usual tip gap widths. As a consequence the stage efficiencies can be achieved too.
Another advantage in reference to usual injection concepts is the fact, that the injection fluid can be used as working fluid in the blade passages of the stages upstream of the stage where it is used for injection purposes because it is extracted from the main flow at the leading edge of the blade. The results of the experimental measurements are supplemented by a statistical investigation. Finally a simple analytical model for a rough estimation of the improvement potential in early design stages is introduced.
