dc.description.abstract
This diploma thesis deals with inverse spectral theory of self-adjoint Sturm-Liouville differential operators, induced by the second-order ordinary differential expression $-\frac{d 2}{dx 2} + q(x)$ in the Hilbert space $L 2(a,b)$. Here $(a,b)$ is a bounded or unbounded interval and $q$ is a locally integrable real-valued function on $(a,b)$. After some general preliminaries about self-adjoint Sturm-Liouville differential operators, we develop a spectral theory of such operators. A central role is played there by the Weyl-Titchmarsh $m$-function and the corresponding spectral measure. Inverse spectral theory deals with problems of identification and reconstruction of Sturm-Liouville operators from certain spectral characteristics, such as the spectrum, the Weyl-Titchmarsh $m$-function or the spectral measure.<br />A main theorem of this thesis is a local uniqueness theorem for the inverse problem from the Weyl-Titchmarsh $m$-function. It states that two self-adjoint Sturm-Liouville operators are locally equal near a boundary point, if the corresponding $m$-functions behave asymptotically similar. We use this to prove so-called half-inverse uniqueness theorems for regular Sturm-Liouville operators. Another major part of this thesis deals with the solvability of the inverse problem from the spectral measure in the regular case. In particular, we give a characterization of all possible spectral measures (and thus all possible spectra) of regular, self-adjoint Sturm-Liouville operators with square-integrable function $q$.
