The village Rohr im Gebirge is situated at the eastern side of the Aplps, close to the mountains Rax and Schneeberg. Eversince wood has been very important for this location, most important was the coal which was made from this wood. The landscape consists of many valleys with small rivers, green meadows and forests. In the past Rohr im Gebirge has been hard to reach, but in the 19th Century visitors came to surrounding country for their holidays, and even today it is a perfect place for vacations. People who like to do all kinds of sports and peple who just want to relax both find what they want here. This project is about planning a hotel, which fits into these surroundings. The site for which it was planned is a meadow close to the centre of the village of Rohr im Gebirge. As there are no surrounding buildings that can take an influence in the design, it is only influenced by topography and the surrounding landscape.
The guests of the hotel are animated to spend their time outside, but this does not mean that the interiors are unimportant. The big hotel rooms are influenced by the surrounding landscape as well. By making use of the topography it was possible to create interesting rooms on different levels, which would not have been possible on a flat building site.
Because of the historic background of the region the only possible choice for a building material was of course wood.
