Within the scope of a research project, which is currently carried out at the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering at the Technical University of Vienna commissioned by VA Tech Hydro GmbH, the hydrodynamic behaviour of the penstock in the hydropower plant ANGOSTURA in Costa Rica, was analyzed by means of a hydraulic model.
The distribution of water from the main penstock or power shaft to the turbines is realized by junctions and manifolds in hydropower plants.
There different junctions exist: single junctions, bifurcators and recently preferred trifurcators (triple junction). Under some operating conditions trifurcators seem to be more advantageous than bifurcators.
Nevertheless in certain loading cases hydrodynamic problems due to flow separations and vortex shedding can be occur.
The supposed reason is probably the particular geometry, because the axes of the three branches converge in one single point with the main conduit and are arranged symmetrically.
In the power plant ANGOSTURA in Costa Rica pressure fluctuations, are occurring caused by unsteady flow conditions in the penstock system.
This leads to longitudinal axial vibrations of the runner and consequently to higher stresses. The junction there is built as trifurcator.
These phenomena are assumed to be caused by the combination of flow separation in the trifurcator and draft tube pulsations respectively by high frequency pressure oscillations of the turbine itself. It is also possible that the adverse length of the individual approaching turbine penstocks amplify the mentioned vibrations.
This diploma work is embedded in the PhD-thesis of A. Joeppen which is currently worked out at the Institute. The previous studies of Voggeneder and Schmid are compared with a modified geometry of the trifurcator.
Visualizations of different flow configurations and pressure fluctuation measurements were realized for further analysis. Additionally the frequency response respectively the eigenfrequency of the system was determined by external impression of single and periodic pressure waves.
The loading case which only admits one lateral turbine penstock was especially considered, because in this case the mentioned vibrations occur strongest at the prototype.
