dc.description.abstract
At the beginning, the fundamental facts of the theory of simplicial sets are shown. Thereby the geometrical background of the theory is emphasized. Simplicial sets are viewed as a generalization of abstract simplicial complexes. All proofs are complete and in detail.
There has been much effort to keep the notation consistent and precise, so the reader gets a solid base to deal with the sometimes puzzling existing literature.
The second part of the text exhibits why Kan complexes have been introduced and which consequences grow out of this concept. Since many simplicial sets are no Kan complexes, Kan proposed the Ex functor. Using this functor, any simplicial set can be extended to a Kan complex by purely combinatorical means. A concluding section hints at the geometry of the Ex functor within an example.
