dc.description.abstract
Sum/:ba:/ut (Sumba builds) deals with the indigenous architecture of the eastern Indonesian island of Sumba. The vernacular architecture on this island is closely associated with its surroundings and the people that utilize it. The main focus thereby lies on the most prominent building of a Sumbanese village, the dwelling house uma. It combines all functions that are required in daily life and serves as a living and sleeping area, kitchen, granary, community house and temple for ancestors, while livestock is kept underneath the house. The dwelling house is a built manifestation of the world order and the society of the Sumbanese people. This phenomenon of the "house as a book" can be found in many societies without scripture, where the house makes it possible for its dwellers to learn and internalise their world order through their built environment. The construction of the Sumbanese house is very well adapted to its surroundings and the lives of its residents or even of a whole clan center around this building. Including local distinctions the uma represents the status of its dwellers and their position in the village community. Within the village the dwelling houses face the "houses of the dead", the ancestral graves. This indicates the close relationship between the Sumbanese and their departed ancestors. Putting the Sumbanese vernacular architecture in the greater context of ist geographical surroundings, similarities in construction and architectural evolution can be detected. Compared to these different building cultures the Sumbanese uma is special by means of its clever combination of a granary and a living house to a large size building. Until today the house serves as an important symbol for the cultural identity of the Sumbanese people.
