The scope of this diploma thesis was the experimental investigation of focal size dependence of laser-induced optical breakdown applied for laser ignition. Laser ignition relies on the fact, that optical breakdown (plasma generation) in gases occurs at high intensities of [10 hoch 11] W/[cm hoch 2]. Such high intensities can be achieved by focusing short laser pulses to small focal sizes. Laser ignition has several benefits compared to conventional spark plug ignition since leaner mixtures can be ignited and it can be operated at larger compression ratios. To analyze the ignitability of the laser spark, several transmission experiments at various pressures and focal sizes were accomplished. The transmission of laser light before formation of and through the induced plasma is a most essential loss factor and depends, amongst other factors, on pressure and incident laser energy. It provides important information about the plasma energy. The experiments were accomplished at several pressures between 1 and 60 bar and laser energies up to 160 mJ. The beam source was a flashlamp-pumped actively Q-switched solid-state Nd:YAG laser with a wavelength of 1064 nm.
A very important part of this diploma thesis is taken up by ignition experiments at several focal sizes and laser energies. The experiments were carried out in a combustion chamber at a filling pressure of 11 bar and a temperature of 110 °C. Again, the beam source was a flashlamp pumped solid-state Nd:YAG laser. The results of transmission and ignition experiments show an advantage of small focal sizes. Another goal was the estimation of the focal size diameter. The focal sizes were calculated and verified experimentally with a beam profiler.
The accordance between measured and calculated data was satisfying.
Additionally this diploma thesis contains some theoretical considerations about the focal volume since no satisfying definition was found in literature. Based on the fact, that the focal volume encloses the space where a specific threshold intensity is exceeded, a theoretical formula was derived.
