dc.description.abstract
Data analysts are facing a fast and steadily growing amount of data in various application domains. There are many approaches to gain deep insight and understanding of the data such as classical statistics or data mining. Visual Exploration focuses on human's remarkable perceptual abilities. Users can scan, recognize and recall images rapidly, and can detect changes in size, color, shape, movement or texture. Time-series are a data type of utmost importance. In many domains, huge amounts of complex, time-related data are collected and analyzed. Many of them relate to human behavior; social rhythms (e.g.
the week) leave a footprint in data stored. This paper proposes both a method and a tool to systematically visualize patterns, trends, regularities and anomalies in time-oriented data. It shows an approach to develop an understanding of time-oriented data and uses a matrix-based visualization technique. The design of the visualization and the graphical user interface were evaluated in a survey. The findings of the survey are presented in this work and outline the shapes of future work. (E.g. the demand for more interactivity concerning zoom and filter operations or the wish for predefined color sets)
