The heat transmission in a floor heating system with horizontal air cavities is treated numerically and experimentally. The theoretical foundations of heat transfer through horizontal layers of air heated from below are discussed and further literature is presented. Heat conduction, convection and radiation is numerically calculated with a finite-element- program (FIDAP, FDI Fluid Dynamics Inc.). The numerical results are compared with experiments. Flow visualization shows good agreement with numerically calculated flow fields. Measured and calculated temperatures also agree well. The measurement errors are calculated using DIN 1319.
