dc.description.abstract
A directly wood particle fired gas turbine requires a special fuel feeding system. A uniform fuel mass flow has to be fed at a steady rate with as low a conveying air mass flow rate as possible and minimal internal power consumption against the operating pressure of the combustion chamber. The fuel is pressurized in a sending bin. A screw feeder meters the fuel mass flow. From the screw, the fuel drops onto the vibration conveyor which attenuates the fuel fluctuations produced by the screw. The fuel is blown into the combustion chamber by an injector and a conveying pipe with a special attachment at its end in the combustion chamber. In this thesis the performance and performance limitations of a fuel feeding system are investigated under consideration of the properties of the wood powder used. Feeding tests were done with four different wood powders. At higher rotational speed of the screw the fuel mass flow rate is more uniform. The coefficient of variation of the mass flow rate is approximately inversely proportional to the rotational speed of the screw and less than 10 % for a screw speed higher than 50rpm. The filling factor of the screw was reduced to 42 %. The coefficient of variation of the flow rate is independent of the filling factor, but depends upon the flow characteristics of the wood powder. The attenuation of mass flow fluctuations by the vibration conveyor is defined by the ratio of the coefficient of variation of the mass flow rate metered by the screw to the coefficient of variation of the mass flow rate after the vibration conveyor. An attenuation up to 4.4 was measured in feeding tests. The attenuation is caused by the irregular particle movement on the vibrator trough and depends upon the mean residence time of the particles on the trough, the solids layer height and the flow characteristics of the wood powder. A too high solids layer restrains the irregular movement of the particles: The continuous solids flow at vibrator discharge is disturbed by discontinuous crumbling. This effects an increasing coefficient of variation after the vibration conveyor and a decreasing attenuation. The conveying air consists of primary and secondary air. The secondary air fraction is defined by the ratio of the secondary air mass flow rate to the conveying air mass flow rate. The secondary air supports the fuel flow in the funnel of the injector. In the mixing chamber of the injector the fuel is entrained into the conveying pipe by the primary air (driving jet). The loading is defined by the ratio of the fuel mass flow rate to the conveying air mass flow rate. With a secondary air fraction of 0% the maximum fuel mass flow rate is approximately proportional to the surface area of the driving jet in the mixing chamber of the injector. At a combustion chamber pressure of approximately 1bar maximum loading is in the range of 0.7 to 3.0 depending on the wood powder used. With a higher secondary air fraction the maximum fuel mass flow rate is higher. With a secondary air fraction of 100 % maximum loading at a combustion chamber pressure of approximately 1bar is in the range of 5.9 to 13.1 depending on the wood powder used. Maximum loading is approximately inversely proportional to the combustion chamber pressure. The cross section area ratio is defined by the ratio of the cross section area of the nozzle exit to the cross section area of the mixing chamber. Injector pressure gain depends upon the cross section area ratio, the secondary air fraction and loading. The change of the injector pressure gain due to a change of the loading is approximately proportional to the cross section area ratio and approximately independent of the secondary air fraction. With a lower cross section area ratio, a higher secondary air fraction and a higher loading the injector pressure gain is lower and the pressure in the sending bin is higher. At a combustion chamber pressure of 2bar the power consumption operating with a secondary air fraction of 100 % is approximately 36 % of the power consumption operating with a secondary air fraction of 0 %. Considering the requirements of the feeding system the injector should be operated with a secondary air fraction of 100 %.
