dc.description.abstract
The aim of the project "MRI_LössLehm", which was part of the framework of the Austrian Minerals Resources Research Partnership, was to classify and describe the loess and loess loam deposits of the classic loess areas of Austria in the Alpine Foreland and the Vienna Basin regarding raw material geological aspects. Starting from analyses of more than 770 samples available at the Geological Survey of Austria, an interdisciplinary approach was pursued. The data include analyses of bulk rock composition, clay mineralogy, chemistry, and grain size distribution. These individual data sets were merged and recorded in a GIS system. Additionally the focus of the work was on the application of different statistical methods for compositional data and the evaluation of their informative value with regard to quality assurance, structuring, and forecasting possibilities. On the basis of these evaluations, the influences of factors, such as climatic, geomorphological, and stratigraphic position on the raw material quality, could be shown and 24 spatially, respectively genetically-stratigraphically related loess or loess loam raw material districts could be defined and implemented in the Interactive Raw Material Information System IRIS-Online.
