dc.description.abstract
The heat utilisation of log wood, wood chips and wood pellets in small furnaces is an essential alternative to the use of fossil energy in Austria. Due to the typical behaviour of tile stoves, such firing systems are important for space heating. Within the framework of this thesis, a basic understanding of the heat storage and heat dissipation of ceramic heat storage will be considered.
In order to cope with the problem of ceramic heat storage, an outline of heat storage types is given, with an emphasis on solid heat storage for sensible heat. Based on the characterisation of the flow by the equations for conservation of mass, momentum and energy, a mathematical model of the ceramic storage was developed. The aim of the simulation tool is to point out the relevant physical processes of the heat transfer by convection, conduction and radiation for special sections of the stove. Instead of modelling the combustion of log wood resp. wood pellets, measurements on tile stoves representing the state of the art were done. By means of this mathematical model the effect of the variation of the size and material of the ceramic heat storage was studied within two projects: ("Investigation of double walled tile stoves." and "Development of a pellet stoked tile stove.") Findings show that the air gap of a double walled tile stove influences the heat storage behaviour, causing a smooth surface temperature distribution but a decline in efficiency. In order to avoid this negative effect, variations of the width of the air gap, ceramic mass, material and length of the flue gas tube were carried out.
In order to increase the significance and attractiveness of tile stoves, the integration of a pellet burner with an automatic feeding system was tested. To complete the automation level of this new heating system, a controller was also developed. An additional trial test confirms the feasibility of the developed pellet stoked tile stove.
