Im Vordergrund der Dissertation steht die Frage, warum bzw. in welcher Form Unternehmen regelmäßig der Gefahr ausgesetzt sind ihre Lebensfähigkeit zu verlieren und welche Implikationen sich daraus für die (präventive) Gestaltung derartiger Organisationen ergeben. Die vorliegende Arbeit beruht dabei auf einem systemischen Grundverständnis wirtschaftlicher Prozesse, d.h. der Phänomenbereich "Unternehmen" wird als soziotechnisches System interpretiert. Um der Forschungsaufgabe gerecht zu werden, wurde zunächst ein spezifisches Unternehmensbild anhand ausgewählter Beiträge aus der Systemtheorie definiert und mit mehreren Konzepten der Lebensfähigkeit (Viable System Model, Viability-Theorie, Theorie der Autopoiese) verknüpft. Daraus konnte eine Definition für den Begriff der "Lebensfähigkeit von Unternehmen" abgeleitet werden, die in weiterer Folge als Basis für die Entwicklung eines Katalogs mit pathologischen Entwicklungsmustern soziotechnischer Systeme diente. Den Schlusspunkt der Arbeit setzt die Erarbeitung von fünf Gestaltungsfeldern und insgesamt zehn Empfehlungen zur Prävention bzw. Abwehr degenerativer Prozesse in Unternehmen.
