The main subject of the present thesis is to present the two-stage process applied at the Main Wastewater Treatment Plant of Vienna (MTPV). The complex combination of interdependent biological processes and control systems, present in the two stages, require an analysis of the operation based on balances of the most important flows for two relevant conditions regarding load and temperature (summer and winter). In the second biological stage optimum aerobic volume control is applied, which is able to adjust the aerobic zones in accordance to the temperature and the nitrogen loads. The optimized aeration results in an economical energy consumption for the aeration of the plant. The aeration tanks of the second biological stage are able to respond rapidly to increased ammonia concentrations or oxygen consumption in changing the size of the aerated zone and thus providing sufficient oxygen for the process of nitrification. Thereby an optimal exploitation of the available volumes is attained. The fine tuned aeration, separately for all fifteen aeration tanks, aims to achieve the highest possible operation safety and process stability. The results of this study showed that approximately 50% of the purification of the plant occur in the second stage. The recirculation of effluent rich in nitrate into the first stage and the dynamic adjustment of the aeration zones allow elimination of nitrogen to a high degree in the first stage. In addition a significant part of the nitrogen is nitrified and denitrified already in the first stage (mainly during summer) due to the input of nitrifying bacteria form the second stage trough the sludge recirculation 2.
The contribution of the excess sludge to the N and P removal is more significant during winter periods than during periods with higher temperature.
During wet weather the concentrations in the effluent are almost equal to these during dry weather. The fact that at the same time the input wastewater is characterized with lower concentrations results into a slightly reduced purification capacity of the plant.
The major advantage of a two-stage wastewater treatment plant compared to a conventional single-stage plant is the considerably lower demand of reaction volume. With 70 l/PE, a parameter characterizing the specific reaction volume, the MTPV remains below the 200 l/PE, a value based on experience from other plants. According to Wandl (2005) the specific reaction volume would have been approximately 140 l/PE if the plant had been extended as a single-stage plant. Hence, the actual two-stage extension was able to reduce the volume of the aeration tanks at the MTPV by half.
