At fugitive dust suppression using water spraying systems the moistening of the bulk solids compared to the capturing of particles by water droplets has the predominant influence on dust minimisation. In this regard a calculation method for the lay out design of water spraying systems was carried out so that minimum water consumption at maximum fugitive dust suppression can get accomplished. This method is based on a bell curve function which is able to describe the space resolved moisture input on an area below the spray nozzle. This space resolved moisture input was experimentally recorded for different spraying parameters (water flux and nozzle position) from where the different bell curve functions could get calculated. As the shape of the bell curve function is described by two constancies a numerical data array of bell curve constancies for different specified spraying parameters can get carried out so that the total spectrum of nozzle operation is covered. The dependency of material specific emission factors on bulk solids moisture got determined by bulk solid drop experiments and described by an emission function. By using the numerical data array and the emission function an optimization calculation method was developed and applied for the optimal lay out design (optimal water flux and nozzle position) of a conveyor belt water spraying
