The research described in this paper is part of the international research project VARISPEED. The aim of the project is to enable main rotor speed variation for helicopters to reduce the required propulsion power, which enables a modern and ecologically efficient aviation. Therefore a transmission-ratio-variable drivetrain and a suitable rotor system for different rotorcraft configurations are under investigation with respect to certification requirements. The mass optimisation of the transmission-ratio-variable drivetrain is the focus of this thesis. A mass estimation model for two different Sikorsky UH-60A Black Hawk transmission system architectures was set up, calculating the mass of gear wheel sets from the free wheel clutch of the main-gearbox-input-shaft to the rotor-shaft and the taildrive-shaft. The first architecture includes a single module for transmission ratio/speed variation, called “variation module”. It is located close to the main rotor shaft. The second architecture contains two variation modules, each located directly after the free wheel clutch and therefore close to the turboshaft engine. These variation modules for ratio respectively speed variation are based on a continuously variable compound split transmission system, consisting of epicyclic gear sets in the power path and hydrostatic engines in the variator path. Various transmission ratios of the gear wheel sets and the variation module were examined to obtain the minimal mass of the transmission system architectures. Each optimised architecture was designed in detail to validate the results. The research should answer the question, if the mass of the variation module variant is the dominating factor for mass optimisation or if other transmission elements of the transmission system architecture have a higher impact. Furthermore it should be discussed, if the changes in the efficiency of the transmission system architecture have a higher impact than the differences in mass of the transmission system architecture. It could be shown that a mass optimised variation module is not equal to a mass optimised transmission system architecture. In some cases it is better to choose a heavier variation module to reach a transmission system architecture with the lowest mass. Also the transmission system architecture has an inuence on the result. Furthermore, it was figured out that the optimisation of the variation modules power path does not necessarily lead to the optimal solution. The variator path and its components must also be considered in the mass optimisation. Moreover, the efficiency must be considered in the optimisation process. Even if the mass of one variant of the transmission system architecture is smaller, the helicopter performance could be lower than with a heavier architecture because of the additional power losses in the transmission.
