dc.description.abstract
The constantly growing electrical power transmission networks place ever higher demands on the dependability and selectivity of the protection systems used in them. In order to meet these requirements, these systems have to be continuously further developed and improved. Distance protection relays have been used for decades to determine the location of faults on overhead lines. However, the method used to determine the fault location can no longer withstand future conditions and is to be replaced by a new method, the so-called reactance method. This thesis deals with the evaluation of the reactance method and possible improvements in distance protection relays. By using the reactance method with separation of the fault resistance an increase of the fault location selectivity in comparison to the conventional method shall be achieved. By applying this method to a model, the improvement of the accuracy in the determination of the fault location is to be analysed and evaluated. First a short introduction is given about the general function of the distance protection. Building on this, the conventional method of fault location determination is explained. By applying the method to a faulty, double-sided supplied line, its problems are discussed. Then the reactance method with separation of the fault resistance is presented and analysed. Thereafter a model is developed and its parameters defined. After implementation of the model in Matlab, different types of faults are simulated. The two fault location methods are applied to determine the fault location in faulty model. The results of the classical method are compared with those of the reactance method. Then a interpretation of both results is given. This allows the reactance method to be evaluated in general. Finally, a general summary of this thesis is presented and an outlook on possible improvements in distance protection relays is given.
