Die Arbeit beginnt mit einem Überblick über die lange Geschichte der Thermalkultur. Außerdem werden konkrete Beispiele umgesetzter Sanierungsprojekte in Italien genannt und 15 bestehende Bäder in Bulgarien für ähnliche Bauvorhaben vorgeschlagen. Der zweite Teil schlägt mögliche Lösungen für vier dieser 15 Bäder in Form einer Kette von Wellness-Zentren vor, die sowohl konventionelle als auch neue Arten von Gesundheitstouristen anziehen soll. Für einen Standort, das Bad in Ovcha Kupel, Sofia, wird ein Projekt entwickelt. Dabei wird ersichtlich, dass jeder Standort individuell analysiert werden muss, um ein passendes Modell für den Restaurierungsprozess zu finden. Das Projekt bietet einen Plan für die Aufwertung des Bauplatzes und umfasst die Restaurierung und Umstrukturierung des Bads, sowie Pläne für ein neues Patientenhotel und einen neuen Parkpavillon. Die Arbeit soll den historischen, gesellschaftlichen und wirtschaftlichen Wert der Bäder aufweisen und Wege vorschlagen, diese auf der Grundlage ihrer ursprünglichen Funktion wiederzubeleben.

dc.description.abstract
The thesis starts with an overview of the long history of thermal culture and the different typologies of public bathhouses. Examples from Italy of successfully restored and revived baths are analysed and 15 similar existing structures in Bulgaria are chosen for further development. The second part of the thesis suggests a solution for four of them, in the form of a chain of wellness centres, which serves both conventional and new types of health tourists. A project is developed for one site, the baths in Ovcha Kupel, Sofia. It serves as an example of how each site has to be individually analysed to find a fitting model for the restoration process. The project defines an action plan for the redevelopment of the whole site, which includes the restoration and restructuring of the baths, as well as plans for a new patient hotel and park pavilion. This thesis aims to show the social and economic worth of historical baths and suggest ways to revive them based on their original function.
