dc.description.abstract
Libraries are among the oldest building tasks in architecture. The library type has been in constant change since antiquity. It has reacted accordingly to the social and technical upheavals but most radically with the introduction of new media. The advancing digitalization contains profound changes in the library system as well as in the library architecture. It seems paradoxical that the library, as a supposed victim of the Digital Revolution, loses its unique feature as a place of knowledge on the one hand, but at the same time, by implementing automated processes, it can optimize its offer and expand its unabated popularity. In addition, the social dimension of the library as a meeting place and place for democratic participation is indispensable, and the book is still significant in its immediacy and tactile quality. The aim of this work is to reveal the potential of the physical space, as well as the potential of digitalization for the vitality of the library and to establish a dialogue between the virtual and physical world. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the changed paradigms of the current stage of the information age and the relevance of the library at the beginning of the 21st century. The evolution of the library, in terms of its typology and spatial form, are recapitulated and examined in relation to social developments. The chronological order is broken up by cross-references and recurring library topics are extracted for the design. The design part deals with the conception of a metropolitan library for Berlin, focusing on the relationship with the urban space, the implementation of new technologies and the proposal of various spatial constellations. The library is located at Blücherplatz in Berlin Kreuzberg in the immediate vicinity of the America Memorial Library. The city of Berlin's intention is to bring the central and regional libraries together with a new building at this location.
