dc.description.abstract
Autonomy in several areas of business is coming – it is not a question of how, but when. Furthermore, the automation of material handling processes is a growing need across business segments. Industrial robots already gaining a lot of space in modern industry automation and cyber – physical applications. Driven by rising labor costs, less availability of qualified workers and the increased pressure of short order fulfillment operations, autonomous guided vehicles have become a disrupting force leading the way to intralogistics as well as Industry 4.0. Human workers will still play a role in digital environments, although with shifted tasks. This master thesis provides an overview of current and upcoming technologies with respect to autonomy in production and its logistics and address the challenges of integration. Interconnectivity of all kind of systems in production environments and interoperability of software tools are just two examples of the digital transformation which has to be solved. Finding and using the right software tools with dedicated features is the foundation of succeeding any software development project. Furthermore, in the scope of this thesis a pilot project for the development of a vendor independent software platform for the integration of autonomous guided vehicles in Industry 4.0 environments has been worked out. This work comprises both, the project management related tasks (presented in chapter 3) as well as the development of the software platform (presented in chapter 5). The project was done in collaboration with the company Agilox GesmbH –an Austrian manufacturer of autonomous guided vehicles. This paper can be seen as one approach and shall help future software development projects and equipment integration in high automated environments where machine – to - machine communication is needed.
