dc.description.abstract
The design work deals with the construction of a new winery in the center of Neusiedl am See in Burgenland. The easternmost state of Austria and especially its unique landscape has been particularly influenced by two factors in the recent years. First, the extinction of the town center, i.e. the loss of function of the village and urban centers with accompanying urban sprawl and migration to the periphery of the settlement areas. Second, wine tourism and the associated architectural and urban interventions in the local fabric. Since these two currents have an enormous formative power for the settlement areas and the landscape, their analysis develops an architectural concept that combines modern functions with traditional architectural elements.
The analysis is based on three parts: the history of the location, vernacular architecture in the district of Burgenland as well as the wine and wine-architecture. The design consists of guest rooms, a restaurant with included wine sales and the actual wine production.
