This present diploma thesis “Formula E – A new course for Vienna” examines the design of a race for Formula E, a new racing series driven with electric cars. While classic series in motorsport lure thousands of spectators from high density population areas to the countryside where the racing causes major air- and noise pollution, Formula E represents its antithesis. Races are being held on temporary courses in cities and the creation of parking spaces for spectators is purposefully avoided as the track should be well connected to public transport. The race itself however is only part of the attraction. Exhibitions display sustainable energy management and future mobility and there is also a wide-ranging offer of infotainment for the whole family.A significant part of the thesis is devoted to the location of the event. Furthermore, planning of the track layout encompasses the answering of essential logistical questions. To conclude, this diploma thesis introduces two architectural structures: An expandable modular grandstand that integrates into existing topography and a temporary garage building that can be assembled and dismantled without much complexity. Both structures stand out due to the fact that they are not at all limited to be used solely by Formula E but rather provide additional value to the city and its residents.
