dc.description.abstract
Synthetic chemists usually aim for well behaving transformations, often referred to as “spot to spot” reactions when TLC reaction control is applied. However, these transformations are more the exception and byproduct formation is frequently observed. Very often, the byproducts are separated upon workup and purification, and often discarded without having a closer look into their structure. This is understandable in target-oriented projects, however, looking into the nature of the byproducts and especially into the pathways which led to their formation can give valuable mechanistic insights and can even lead to the discovery of new reactivity and to the development of new transformations.
In this contribution, it will be shown, how the direct alkylation reaction shown below, which was accompanied by the formation of many byproducts, could be exploited for the development of several new transformations and mechanistic investigation.
