Auftrieb und Drall der Stadt Mahagonni. Stadt und Handel - Untersuchung eines Spannungszustands in zwei Teilen

Abstract

Diese Arbeit untersucht jenes Spannungsverhältnis, das sich zwischen der Stadt und dem Handel, der Architektur und ihrem Markt aufspannt. Hypothese dabei ist, dass die Stadt zwar nicht minder Ort des Handels ist, dass sie beziehungsweise ihre Elemente aber zum einen ebenso Objekt, daher Gut wird (und was dies bedeuten mag) und wie sie zum anderen als spezifisch Agierende in Stellung gebracht wird. Diese Arbeit ist in zwei Teile strukturiert. Teil 1 analysiert, wie sich das komplizierte Verhältnis manifestiert und gibt Einblick in ebenjene Manifestationen in Kapiteln über Bodenpolitik, Leistbarkeit, die unternehmerische Stadt, sowie Strategien wie Public-Private Partnerships und Business Improvement Districts. Fokussiert wird dabei auf Entwicklungen der Gegenwart. Teil 2 ist entkoppelt, aber thematisch verknüpft: Dieser Abschnitt behandelt die Thematik in einer anderen Sphäre, in der die allegorische Figur des Handelsmanns zu einer Hauptfigur eines Librettos wird, sich der Stadt und dem Handel daher literarisch zugewendet wird.

This diploma investigates the field of tension spanning between the city and trade, architecture and its market. Commencing from the hypothesis that the city is less a location of trade but it respectively its elements become an object that turns into a good, it aims to analyze what that could mean and how the city itself is positioned as a stakeholder. The text consists of two parts. Part 1 analyses how the complex relationship in between city and trade manifests and gives an insight in those manifestations through a series of chapters concering, respectively, politics of land (Bodenpolitik), affordability (Leistbarkeit), the Entrepreneurial City (die Unternehmerische Stadt), as well as strategies like public- private partnerships and business improvement districts. The focus of this part is current developments. Part 2 is independent from part 1 but thematically connected; it discusses the topic through a different spectrum: The allegorical figure of the merchant turns into the protagonist of a libretto and thus, the encounter of city and trade takes place literarily.
