dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
In this thesis, Edgeworth expansions for the approximative determination of European call and put option prices in the stochastic volatility model of Steven L. Heston are examined. For this purpose, the exact option prices arising from the Heston model are approximated by Edgeworth expansions based on a formula by S. Blinnikov and R. Moessner and the implicit volatility curves that arise are compared. In addition, a comparison is made between the characteristic function of the log-stock price at maturity and truncated series expansions of the characteristic function. After an overview of the Black-Scholes model and fundamental financial mathematical concepts, the Heston model is introduced. In addition to the model dynamics, a derivation of the Heston PDE and the characteristic functions of the two “in-the-money” probabilities is provided. Furthermore, the Gil-Pelaez Fourier inversion formula is proved, which can be applied to determine the prices of European call and put options in the Heston model. Additionally, a general overview of Edgeworth expansions as well as possibilities for option price approximations using Edgeworth expansions is given. Finally, numerical tests and analyses are carried out in which the approximation method is examined for various parameters in the Heston model. The analyses within the scope of this thesis have shown that the prices of European call and put options in the Heston model can be determined comparatively quickly and accurately using this approximation method.
