dc.description.abstract
The industrialization offered significant opportunities and due to continuous innovation and enhancements, the level of prosperity increased tremendously during the last century. This acceleration effected over decades invisibly the global atmosphere and led to climate changes and temperature rises. Mostly responsibly for that issue is the combustion of carboniferous substances, like coal or liquid fuels (petrol, diesel, etc.). However, many different sectors are responsible for the accelerated climatic effect; the industry sector is not alone accountable, but for sure, it is one of the main CO2 emitters in today’s society. Investments as well as the resulting projects creating additional value for a company. They are essential in case of inevitable alignments of business activities or changes. As a consequence of their importance, a vital activity is the analysis in terms of economic viability beside of other approaches. Diverse investment tools are available and well known in specific literature; the net present value (NPV) as well as the internal rate of return (IRR) methods exemplifies that approach. Consider this objectively, the greenhouse emission influences the climate change drastically and accelerating the effects of heavy weather events more and more. Therefore, reducing greenhouse gases should be under interest of any investments and projects, especially in the energy and industrial sector. Otherwise, threatening incidents affecting ecologically and economically on business environments besides other fundamentals like image of a company. Thus, the motivation of considering the impact on environment regarding greenhouse emission reduction must be an additional key driver of project evaluation. The mitigation of greenhouse emission is obviously not under consideration in the traditional investment techniques and their tools, like the NPV method. There is still no doubt that the greenhouse gas emissions are threatening our environment sustainably with the climate change consequences. As a result of that, uncertainties with steadily rising probabilities must be taken under consideration by investing activities. The standard model of the popular NPV method has no opportunity to elaborate greenhouse emissions effects explicitly into the investment assessment. Consequently, greenhouse effects could be elaborated indirectly into the investment assessment by considering greenhouse emissions costs within the cash flows. The negative aspect of that, is the unobvious reporting of CO2effects on investment. An explicit method of reporting CO2 effects of investment would be advantageously to support the approach of global climate mitigation. Therefore, this master thesis is scoping on the elaboration of a CO2 corrected investment indicator for a sustainable investment assessment. Another key driver for such an indicator is the increasing level of cost impact of CO2 on investments. To depict this approach, the indicator Carbon Dependence of Investment (CDI) is combined with the standard NPV, the result is the CO2-corrected NPV. One effect of that new indicator could be, that climate friendly investments, like solar or wind power plants, are preferably in terms of investment compared to climate unfriendly techniques of energy production.
