The Network of Boundaries and its Monuments : Thematic Study and proposed Strategy for World Heritage Nomination

Abstract

The Austrian Ministry for Culture (BMKÖS) has commissioned and funded this Thematic Study and proposed Strategy for World Heritage Nomination of “The Network of Boundaries and its Monuments”. It should serve as a basic working paper for a Transnational serial nomination for UNESCO World Heritage. A group of international experts from the fields of surveying, administration, law, economics, history, culture and World Heritage joined forces to prepare a text to be approved by the participating States Parties Austria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Slovenia, which have been sharing a common history and tradition in surveying and land administration for centuries. The professional organizations of surveyors, the national land administration authorities as well as numerous highly reputed technical universities in the respective countries support the initiative. Context and background of the nomination, the scientific, economic and technical importance of the network of boundaries of land property, monuments like outstanding boundary marks, original cadastral triangulation signs, important historical buildings for the land administration are described as components of the Austrian property in the five first chapters. The common nomination strategy for all participating States Parties, uniform selection criteria, collaboration and management system, timetable and extent follow in the next five sections. The annexes contain the draft of the Austrian application, texts of the LOI and the management commitment and the sites proposed by the States Parties at the symposium in Vienna 2019. The authors of this document sincerely hope to have contributed to a successful step forward for the World Heritage Nomination of “The Network of Boundaries and its Monuments”.
