dc.description.abstract
The aim of this work is to examine aircraft fuel tank flammability and its behavior during flight missions. In the first part of this report, the relevant properties of jet fuels are provided. Then, the structure of aircraft fuel systems is exemplified, with an emphasis on inerting systems and components that have an influence on the composition of the fuel-vapor air mixture in aircraft fuel tanks. Not only commercial aircraft, but also helicopter applications are examined. The main part of the report presents two different models to investigate numerous effects on fuel tank flammability with a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach, using state of the art software, Matlab and ANSYS Fluent. The first one aims to simulate the fuel dispersion in a partially, with jet fuel, filled helicopter fuel tank, that is exposed to a certain acceleration profile. After an explication of the modelling and the Fluent settings, several effects are examined and the results are presented and discussed. The second one models a partially filled airplane tank over a whole flight cycle (taxi, take-off, ascent, cruise, descent and landing) to study the composition and the flow of the fuel-vapor air mixture. At first, a preliminary calculation with Matlab is performed in order to give an estimate of the results that can be expected. Then, the Fluent model is established.
