dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
In the steel industry, annealing is an essential step in the production of stainless steel strips. The strip is conveyed through the furnace on rolls with a predefined velocity. Independent of the velocity, a desired strip temperature has to be reached at exit of the furnace. Based on first principles, a mathematical model of a horizontal annealing furnace is developed. The model contains the essential nonlinearities of the real system. The heat exchange between the strip, the walls, the rolls, and the flue gas is taken into account by heat conduction, convection, and thermal radiation. As input variables of the model, the mass flows of the fuel and the strip velocity are used. In order to facilitate real time control based on this model, a reduced model is developed by means of a special integration strategy, which uses the upwind method. This integration method allows a larger sample time and, hence, the required simulation time is reduced. The parameterization of the model and the analysis of the model are performed based on prozess data from the real furnace. Simulation results of the two models are compared with each other and with the measured temperatures of the strip and the flue gas. Based on the models, an adaptive parameter estimator is designed to reduce the deviations between the simulated and the measured strip temperatures.
