To be successful at the global market for hydro power generation it is necessary to find the right strategy for global expansion and internal structure. Different companies from different countries, especially Central Europe, found different ways to be more competitive, successful and sustainable. I have chosen Alstom, ANDRITZ and Voith as the representatives for successful companies, because they are the major global players at the hydro power generation market. In this thesis I show the history of the companies from their founding until now (2010). I have analyzed the importance of the hydro/power sector of Alstom, ANDRITZ and Voith for the overall annual business success. I show their annual profit (EBIT or EBITA or EBT) and the R&D expenditures since 2002. At the end I compare the annual sales, the annual order intakes and the employees between the three companies to find the most successful expansion strategy and business structure which leads to a competitive, successful and sustainable enterprise.
