Comics als Präsentationsmittel in der Architektur

Abstract

Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Medium Comic als Präsentationsform in der Architektur. Architekten greifen in ihrer Arbeit auf verschiedene Kommunikationsmittel zurück, um ihre Projekte und Konzepte zu präsentieren, Comics zählen allerdings nur in den wenigsten Fällen dazu. Das Forschungsinteresse dieser Arbeit widmet sich daher der Frage, ob und wie Comics als Präsentationsmittel in der Architektur eingesetzt werden können. Dazu wird der Frage des Zusammenspiels zwischen und die mögliche Symbiose von Comics und Architektur näher betrachtet. Besonders zentral ist dabei die Frage, inwieweit die spezifischen Erzähltechniken der Comics in der Architektur Anwendung finden könnten. Ziel ist es zu klären, ob Comics ein hilfreiches Mittel sein können bzw. sind, um Architektur besser zu erklären, darzustellen und zu kommunizieren. Nachdem diese Fragestellung bisher kaum wissenschaftlich aufgearbeitet wurde, bildet vor allem die vorhandene (hauptsächlich erzähltheoretische) Fachliteratur über Comics die Grundlage dieser Arbeit. Beiträge über Konferenzen und Ausstellungen, die sich mit dem Thema Architektur und Comics beschäftigten, sowie zeitgenössische Untersuchungen zum Thema der Intermedialität stellen ergänzende Informationsquellen dar. Anhand einiger Beispiele wird im Ergebnis deutlich, dass - obwohl sich bisher keine systematische Anwendung von Comics in der Architektur herausgebildet hat - diese ein enormes Potential als Präsentationsmittel in der Architektur besitzen. Comics könnten ein sehr wirkungsvolles Medium für Kommunikation in der Architektur sein, unter der Voraussetzung, dass sie gezielt und bewusst eingesetzt werden. Dabei erscheint ein zukünftig verstärkter Einsatz von Comics als Präsentationsmethode durchaus als eine interessante und spannende Perspektive.

This thesis examines the medium of comics as a presentation form in architecture. Even though architects use various means of communication to visualize ideas and concepts and present their architectural designs, comics are rarely applied in architecture as a communication tool. The focus of this thesis is therefore the question, whether and if so, how can comics be employed as a method of representation in architecture. For this purpose, the exchange and encounters between architecture and comics and their possible symbiosis will be explored. The key issue is to discover what the profession of architecture could learn from comics and to which extent the unique techniques of storytelling found in comics can be used in the architectural field. This thesis aims to examine whether comics can be of architectural usage, in order to better explain, display and communicate architecture.<br />Since the analytical and theoretical approaches to this topic are limited and almost non-existent, the main research source for this thesis was found in the existing literature on comics from the field of narrative theory. Other sources are publications from conferences and exhibitions, which covered the subject of architecture and comics, as well as contemporary researches that deal with questions of intermediality. On the basis of examples of comics that have been employed by architects in the presentation of their work, it can be concluded that comics - even though there is no systematic approach to it - offer great potential as a method of representation in architecture. If architects would adopt a more targeted approach to the usage of comics, these can be effective communication tools in architecture. Given that contemporary architecture is capable of employing comics as a method of presentation, it appears that an increased use of comics as a presentation device can be an interesting perspective for the future.
