dc.description.abstract
dc.description.abstract
Software development of avionic systems is based on software standards for airborne systems. These documents contain essential limitations for development methods and the implementation of software.
The aim of this work is the gathering of requirements for a terrain rendering software used for a three dimensional representation on the Primary Flight Display of a helicopter, so that the pilot can navigate according to this visualisation. The challenge lies in the "non-restricted-quadtree" data structure of the given input data and the following triangulation with the resources of an embedded system. The solution for this challenge can be found in an improvement of the work of Mariano Perez from 2004. In the original version, the work of Perez can not be used for this specific problem, because the triangulation does not fulfill a given accuracy which is important for the certification process. The quadtree triangulation approach is based on the possibility to fill individual nodes of a quadtree to a list structure, so that an optimized mesh structure can be created, based on the height values of each node and the neighbourhood information of the list structure. This master thesis shows an approach, how a terrain render engine can be designed, so that it fulfills the user requirements, and the software standardisation requirements for airborne systems. The implementation part discusses the integration in detail and explains challenges in memory consumption, performance and image quality.
